What is SASE?

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) was introduced by Gartner in 2019 in order to define the convergence of two pillars, networking and security, into a single service. The networking pillar of SASE is focused on resiliency and optimisation of network access and includes SD-WAN, WAN optimisation and quality of service (QoS). The security pillar secures network traffic and application access by converging Secure Web Gateway (SWG), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and Firewall as a Service (FWaaS) to ensure corporate security policies are enforced on all users and locations.

SSE vs SASE: What is the difference?

In 2021 Gartner introduced a new category called Security Service Edge (SSE). SSE is a more limited scope of network and security convergence which combines Secure Web Gateway (SWG), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), Data Loss Prevention (DLP and Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) into one service.
